    Become A Discord Moderator

While the staff team is widely international, there are still only so many languages we are able to cover among us at any given time. Providing adequate, real-time moderation across our Discord's many language channels has proven challenging, if not unrealistic. Recently it has also not been uncommon that player reports and screenshots submitted to us contain crucial information in languages we cannot fluently communicate in or properly decipher on a short notice, and this tends to slow down our ability to act as fast as we'd like. As, we realize, this is less than an ideal circumstance to have for a server of this size, we are looking to recruit dedicated Discord Mods who we hope can aid us in keeping also our non-English channels safe and friendly spaces for the communities participating in them.

Here is a list of the current language channels on our Discord (in no particular order):

    Spanish Russian Vietnamese
    French Korean Italian
    Portuguese Japanese Arabic
    Tagalog Chinese Malay
    German Indonesian

As a prospective individual, we envision you as skilled at evaluating whatever situation that may come your way calmly and fairly, and adept at making decisions that are in accordance with our rules. Taking responsibility should be your second nature, as it is at the front, core and center in the role of a moderator. Essentially, what you would do, is making sure everyone plays nice. To give you an idea, this can take various forms and range from dispensing thoughtful reminders to handling incidents of verbal abuse between two players, to swiftly removing inappropriate content.

If you're following through this far, please note that we largely expect you to apply to one language channel only (from the list above). We are aware that you may be able to speak multiple different languages fluently and well, and indeed it is not our intention to slow your roll, but our foremost priority is that you have (and take) reasonable time to focus on one channel of your choice and interest. It is more important to us that this particular task (moderating of your channel of choice) is done well than effort to cover all possible areas with varying degrees of success. However, regardless of your chosen language, you need to have a good command of English. To work well with you, we need to have a language in common.

Here we'd also like to note that if you speak a language that is not currently on our Discord but feel it should be because there's community for it, don't hesitate to reach out to us.

While above all we seek to fill moderation posts for the various languages on our Discord, we also welcome a handful of general moderators to join us. Such individuals would be expected to keep an eye on the class channels in particular, and otherwise similarly tasked with moderating responsibly and well.

If you are new to moderation but eager to learn, Discord has compiled a useful collection of articles in their Moderator Academy. We strongly encourage all prospective applicants to read through these texts.

Kindly note that being a moderator is classified as volunteer work. Please do not expect monetary reimbursement from having this position.
As with our regular applications, before you proceed, read the rest of this post thoroughly, and post any questions you have in this thread before you begin filling in your answers.

      RULES & REQUIREMENTS

      • Age: 19 or older.
You have to be at least 19 years old in order for your application to be considered.
      • Applications must be filled out in English.
While most staff members are multilingual, the server's primary language remains English. Your command of this language does not have to be perfect but we consider that your application reflects your fluency. Game Masters represent the server so it is important that you are able to express yourself clearly and well.
      • All applications must be filled out in their entirety.
Please do not leave any fields empty. While we understand that some questions may seem difficult or tedious to answer, we ask that you fill each field to the best of your ability. Please aspire to use full sentences, proper punctuation and capitalization and also avoid abbreviations.
      • Any applications filled out improperly will not be considered.
As we process a large number of applications, we will not be contacting any individual applicants regarding potential errors or omissions. It would also not be fair for those applicants who invested time into making sure theirs were properly filled. So please double-check your application before you send it to us.
      • Please do not send multiple applications or ask about the application status.
You will be notified of our final decision once we are ready to do so. Recruitment is a lenghty process and we will reply to everyone in due time.
      • Do not copy someone else's application.
The application should come from you and you alone. If we find any signs of copied work, you (both) will be instantly rejected.
      • Do not post applications in this thread. They will be deleted, and you will be immediately disqualified.
The only thing this would do, would be providing a clear indication that you have not paid adequate attention to this section.

      HOW TO APPLY

      1. Copy and paste the application found in the spoiler tag of this post into a message via THIS LINK.
You can remove the comments in small font without any worry. They're only there to clarify the questions so that they're easier for you to answer. As for the length of your answers, it is completely up to your discretion; your replies may be elaborate, consice, or something in-between. Whichever you feel most comfortable with.

      2. Please BOLD your answers.
This will make the application easier for us to read. You can do this easily by highlighting your answer, then pressing Ctrl + B.

      3. Keep the rest of your message default.
This is basically us asking you to spare our eyes from rainbow colors. Creative formatting will get you attention but not the kind you want if you want to be seriously considered. Creativity is truly wonderful, just please not here, as it will also show that you are not able to follow the most basic of instructions. We don't want your formatting to detract our attention away from what you're saying, and ask you to respect this wish.

      4. Use the appropriate title for your message. The format should be [Language Channel or General] Discord Moderator - [Your Discord Name].
If you copy one of the samples into your application, please don't forget to change the name too. It's a little awkward to read repeat applications from "Nova".

        Examples:

        Valyrian Discord Mod - Nova

        Klingon Discord Mod - Tokei

      • Your real name:
      • Your Discord name:
      • Your in-game name:
      • Age:
      • Language(s) you speak:

      • What can you tell us about yourself?
Please introduce the magnificent person on the other side of the screen with a few lines of text, so we can have an inkling of who you are.

      • How long have you been playing on NovaRO?

      • Have you been a moderator on any other servers or in any other games?
If so, what was your name there, what server was it, and how long were you a moderator for?

      • Why are you applying to moderate (this channel)?

      • Do you have any worries or reservations about this position, and if so, what are they?

      • How many hours per week will you dedicate to moderating your channel of choice?
If you do not know, please explain briefly what your weekly schedule is like, and where you think you would fit Discord monitoring.

      • Have you read the Moderator Academy guide?
If yes, what have you learned from it?
        If no, why not?

      • Do you know any Staff Members from any server (NovaRO included) that would vouch for you?
If so, kindly provide contact information. Please note that references will be verified.

      • (Optional) Is there anything else you want to say or add?

      Hello :delphiheart:

Not entirely related to this discussion, but reading through the post sparked my curiosity, so I hope that asking a question is ok: has the staff considered expanding this project to in-game channels as well? I understand that while the two actions are similar in nature, the latter is significantly harder to implement and keep an eye on, so I just wanted to know if there are plans to do so. I do not intend to pose this as a suggestion, so I apologize if I came across as such, seeing as this thread is hardly the place for this kind of thing, but still, I got curious.

      Thanks in advance!

      Hello Greystache!

That's a good question. It would be great if there was a possibility for us to do this initiative in-game also, but it's quite a bit less simple than what I think it might look like at a glance. I won't be going into too much detail but as tempting the proposal is, after discussing it, we found it poses a few too many dilemmas for us. On one hand we don't feel we can give moderators the same commands that a regular GMs wields, and on the other, stripping these commands means chipping away the authority that a GM position holds. When weighing the benefits of this sort of new "middlegroundish" role in-game, we found we're more concerned about it not being able to able to do enough to justify its existence and we have yet to come up with a satisfactory solution. Because of this, we are not explicitly looking for in-game channel moderators. We're (of course) always open to our GMs tackling the channels to their best abililty, but aside from that, for the rest of the way we rely on player reports.
